The SSGT Chris Engeldrum FDNY Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12033 was instituted on 8/12/2005, in memory of SSGT Christian P. Engeldrum, the first New York firefighter to die in Iraq out of the 103 who have been activated since 9/11. In keeping in the spirit of their national organization, they have been steadfast supporters of the rehabilitation of disabled veterans from Walter Reed and Bethesda Hospitals, assisted the widows and orphans of disabled and needy veterans and promoted Americanism through education in patriotism and service to the community of New York City. The Thomas R. Elsasser Fund was established in 1992 to support the families of NYC firefighters who died non-line of duty as active members of the FDNY. This fund supports the many families that do not have access to the more lucrative financial benefit packages that the families of members who have made the supreme sacrifice do. The funds are used to help with medical costs, housing and repairs and school tuition, to name a few.
