Mardi Gras 2012 in NYC

[Note: This page was for Mardi Gras 2012. For this year’s Mardi Gras, please visit murphguide.com/mardi-gras/mardi-gras-2013-in-nyc/]
Mardi Gras in NYCMardi Gras is the custom of power-loading your gluttonous behavior into one night before Ash Wednesday (hence the name Fat Tuesday).  The first Mardi Gras in America was celebrated in Mobile, Alabama (then the capital of French Louisiana). New Orleans has become known as the capital of Mardi Gras, but if you can’t make it to The Big Easy, you can catch the New Orleans flavor, party atmosphere or live jazz right here in NYC. Below are some suggestions.  Foursquare users can check out our hand Mardi Gras list here. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Bourbon Street on Restaurant RowMardi Gras at Bourbon Street on Restaurant Row
Every day is Mardi Gras at Bourbon Street Bar & Grille, but they kick it up a notch for the real thing.  They will be holding their Mask Ball on Saturday night. Their chef Paul Simon will be cooking their delicious gumbo in Sunday’s Gumbo Cook Off at Jimmy’s No. 43.  They have also added Gambino’s king cake, live boiled crawfish, and traditional muffelettas to their menu.
