Michael McGuire, also known as Jumbo, is struggling with a life altering illness, chronic kidney disease (CKD).   Diagnosed nearly 5 years ago, complications such as hypertension caused his condition to deteriorate quickly.  Working as a limo driver in NYC did not allow him the flexibility needed to receive dialysis treatments four hours a day, three days a week. As a result, Michael moved to Florida with his mother where he has the best care and support, and a schedule that permits dialysis. Michael has been on dialysis for nearly 3 years, and needs a kidney transplant.

Transplant, while life saving are very expensive. Michael has been on the Mayo Clinic transplant list for nearly two years. However, to remain on the active kidney transplant waiting list and before transplant can occur, Michael has been told by his social worker that he has to have at least $9,800 available to cover a year’s transplant related uninsured medical expenses, including the very expensive anti-rejection medications that he will have to take for the rest of his life, and $12,000 by the Tampa facility where he will need to stay as he waits for the transplant.
